If you're searching for QuickBooks India alternatives, here's the short version: QuickBooks stopped serving India. Intuit ended sales in July 2022 and cut off access for existing Indian customers on 30 April 2023, so as a freelancer you can't start on QuickBooks here today. The good news is that the tools that replaced it are cheaper and better suited to how Indian freelancers actually bill. This is an honest look at the best QuickBooks alternatives for freelancers in India in 2026, what each costs, and which one fits your situation.
Full disclosure: I built Riffit, one of the tools on this list. I will be straight about where it fits and where another tool is the better call.
Why QuickBooks is gone from India
Intuit shut down QuickBooks in India. New sign-ups closed in July 2022, and existing subscribers lost access on 30 April 2023, with refunds issued for the unused part of their plans. Since then there has been no India version of QuickBooks Online, the mobile app, or QuickBooks Time. If you're a freelancer who once used it or read old advice recommending it, that advice is out of date.
The upside is that QuickBooks was always heavier than a solo freelancer needs. It's full double-entry accounting software. Most freelancers invoicing a handful of clients a month were paying for depth they never touched. The alternatives below range from equally full accounting suites to tools that do one job, invoicing, and do it fast.
The honest shortlist
Different freelancers need different things, so there's no single winner. Match the tool to how much accounting you actually do.
Zoho Invoice
Zoho Invoice free; Zoho Books free under ₹25L turnover, Standard ₹899/mo or ₹749/mo billed annuallyThe closest full replacement, India-built, deep but more to learn
Zoho is the natural landing spot for anyone who liked QuickBooks. Zoho Invoice is genuinely free for invoicing, and Zoho Books adds full GST accounting with a free tier for businesses under ₹25,00,000 turnover. If you want the whole accounting picture and are willing to spend an afternoon setting it up, this is the closest thing to what you lost. If Zoho itself turns out to be more software than you wanted, I lined up the lighter options in the Zoho Invoice alternatives guide.
Refrens
Free plan capped at 15 documents lifetime; paid plans above thatFreelancer-first, invoices plus quotations and expense tracking
Refrens is built with freelancers and small agencies in mind, so it feels lighter than an accounting suite while still handling GST invoices, quotations, and basic expense tracking. If you want more than pure invoicing but less than full books, it sits in the middle. I compared it head to head in the Refrens review if you want the detail.
FreshBooks
From about $23/mo, billed in USDPolished, international, priced and built for USD invoicing
FreshBooks is the tool ex-QuickBooks users abroad tend to move to, and it's excellent at what it does. For an Indian freelancer it has two catches: it bills in USD, and it's built around US and international tax rather than Indian GST. If most of your clients are overseas and you invoice in dollars, it's worth a look. If you bill Indian clients in rupees, it's an awkward fit. I go deeper in the FreshBooks for Indian freelancers breakdown.
Riffit is the opposite end of the scale from QuickBooks. It doesn't do accounting. It creates professional invoices, from a WhatsApp message or the dashboard, with your branding and a UPI payment link, and it tracks what's pending, paid, and overdue. If invoicing was the only part of QuickBooks you actually used, this replaces that part in one WhatsApp message and skips the rest. You can add your GST number to invoices, though Riffit doesn't handle full GST accounting.
To be precise about the tiers, since I'm asking you to compare them: the free plan is 5 invoices a month with email delivery, and every signup starts on a 14-day Pro trial. Describing an invoice in plain language and sending it to a client over WhatsApp are both Pro features, at ₹249/month or ₹199/month billed annually.
QuickBooks alternatives compared
| Tool | Starting price | Free tier | GST | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zoho | Free (Invoice); Books Standard ₹899/mo (₹749 annual) | Yes | Full GST accounting | Freelancers who want complete books |
| Refrens | Free; paid for volume | Yes | GST invoices | Freelancers wanting invoices plus quotes |
| FreshBooks | ~$23/mo (USD) | No | Not India GST | USD-billing, overseas clients |
| Vyapar | Paid, from ~₹700/yr (mobile) | Limited | GST billing | Product sellers, inventory needs |
| Riffit | Free (5/mo); Pro ₹249/mo | Yes | Add your GST number | Fast invoicing without the accounting weight |
Vyapar is worth a mention for anyone who sells products alongside services, since it handles inventory and GST billing, but it's more billing software for small shops than a freelancer tool. If you're a pure service freelancer, it's more than you need.
How to choose your QuickBooks alternative
Ask one question: how much of QuickBooks did you actually use?
If you ran your full books in it, tracked expenses, categories, and reports, move to Zoho Books. It's the honest like-for-like replacement in India, and the free tier under ₹25,00,000 turnover covers most solo freelancers.
If you invoiced Indian clients and did a little tracking, Refrens or Riffit will feel lighter and faster. Refrens if you want quotations and expenses in the mix, Riffit if you want invoicing to be one WhatsApp message and live where your clients already are.
If your clients are overseas and you bill in dollars, FreshBooks fits the currency and the tax model better than any India-first tool, even at USD pricing.
There's no shame in downgrading. QuickBooks was accounting software. Most freelancers need an invoicing tool with a bit of tracking, not a general ledger. For a wider view across the market, the best invoicing tool comparison lines up the main options side by side.
FAQ
No. Intuit stopped selling QuickBooks in India in July 2022 and ended access for existing Indian customers on 30 April 2023. There is no India version of QuickBooks Online, the mobile app, or QuickBooks Time available today, so freelancers need an alternative.
QuickBooks leaving India was a nudge a lot of freelancers needed. The tools that replaced it are cheaper, and most of us never needed full accounting software to begin with. With Riffit, invoicing goes back to being a one-message job, so the only thing you carry forward from QuickBooks is the habit of billing on time.
