Closing an invoice short, or cancelling it
Two ways to end an invoice that will not be paid in full. When each one is available, what your client sees, and what it does to your totals.

Most invoices end with a payment. Some end another way: the client paid part and went quiet, or the invoice should never have gone out. Riffit has one move for each, and which one you get depends on whether any money has been recorded.
Both are on the invoice's menu on the dashboard, on every plan. Neither is in chat.
Short close: some of it was paid
Use it when a client has paid part of an invoice and no more is coming. The client left, the scope shrank, or you have decided the rest is not worth chasing.
It appears as Close Invoice once a part payment is recorded on an invoice that is still open. Riffit shows you the amount paid against the total before you confirm.
After that:
- The invoice is closed, and it reads Closed rather than Paid, on your dashboard and on your client's page.
- Your client's page says you closed it and that nothing further is due.
- What was paid still counts as collected. The unpaid rest is not counted anywhere, and it is not rounded up to look paid.
- Reminders stop.
A close for TDS is different, and not a short close at all. A client who paid part to you and the rest as TDS against your PAN has paid in full, and you record that from Mark As Paid: Recording a payment.
Cancel: nothing was paid
Use it when an invoice went out and should not be paid at all. The job fell through, or the invoice was wrong and you are sending a fresh one.
It appears as Cancel Invoice on a sent invoice with no payment recorded. Once any payment is recorded, cancel is gone and a short close is the way out.
After that:
- The invoice reads Cancelled. It stays in your records, and its number is not reused.
- Your client can no longer pay it.
- Reminders stop.
- It cannot be undone. If you need it back, make a new invoice.
On Free, a cancelled invoice still counts toward your 5 for the month it was made.
Drafts are deleted, not cancelled
A draft has not gone anywhere, so there is nothing to cancel. Open it and use Delete instead. A deleted draft does not come back, and it has already counted toward Free's 5 for that month.
Quotes and contracts
Both can be cancelled too. A cancelled quote can no longer be accepted, and it stays in your records, so you can always send the client a new one. You can cancel a quote from chat as well, by typing cancel my quote.
A cancelled contract can no longer be viewed or signed, and it cannot be revived. You would send a new contract from scratch.
